General Information
Alloy swords with elements of the force embedded within them were originally used by the Jedi. The discovery that it was possible to actually freeze a laser beam made the traditional alloy sword obsolete. The first lightsabers were created by 15,500 BBY. The construction of the weapons soon became an installment in the rigorous Jedi training.
Jedi Lightsaber
Jedi travel to the caves on planet Ilum to find a Adegan focusing crystal. Then the next month is spent constructing the weapon, which takes not only a good understanding of the technology, but also an attunement to the Force. The end product is a well balanced weapon with a green or blue blade. The coloration of the blade is due to the type of crystals found on Ilum.
Sith Lightsaber
The Sith Empire was formed by exiled Jedi, consequently the Sith also have the knowledge to forge their own lightsabers. A Sith lightsaber is red, this is because of the synthetic crystal used in the construction of the Dark-force weapon. The synthetic crystals within the hilt of the Sith lightsabers allow for a slightly stronger blade. These blades on occasion have the ability to actually short out a Jedi lightsaber, giving the Sith a slight advantage. The powerful lightsabers were not without disadvantages though, as they tended to be unstable and more difficult to wield.
