General Information
A species from the planet Dorin, the Kel Dors (also called Kel Dorians) must have masks when located in highly oxygenated environments. A group of Kel Dors known as the Baran Do Sages are known for their ability to use the Force and passed down the skills to their offspring. A very famous Kel Dor Jedi Master was named Plo Koon. His neice was Sha Koon, a Jedi Knight.
History, Culture, and Society
The major area of interest with the Kel Dor is their heightened awareness and use of the Force. Prior to any Kel Dor's joining the Jedi or Galactic Republic, the Kel Dor used the Force throughout their daily lives. Certain individuals were blessed with a greater ablilty than others to use the Force. These Kel Dor became rich and powerful by first using their powers to predict the weather and other "simple" things. As their knowledge and practice grew they soon realized the Force could be used to predict and often prevent certain events that could put the Kel Dor in a dangerous situation. Baran Do Sages were the given name to those who used the Force and who passed it down to their offspring. These individuals advised wealthy and powerful Kel Dor families and were known to prevent war/disaster due to their immense understanding of the Force. Due to the Jedi gradually gaining more knowledge of the force, the Kel Dor who had joined the Republic slowly faded in numbers and their power weakened. Jedi infants who could sense the Force would sometimes interact with Kel Dor children aware of the Force. This would allow both children to learn from one another and strengthen their powers. Due to their scarcity through time, the Kel Dor remained virtually untouched during the Jedi Purges.
The Kel Dor society remained quite peaceful due to their great hospitality for one another. Helping strangers and individuals in need was never questioned. On the other hand, if one of their own people simply stole a meal to survive on, there was no recourse to put that individual to death for such a crime. Their society slowly became full of genuinely good people and they were highly respected as a society.
Appearance, Biology, and Demographics
The Kel Dor's stature and build is similar to that of humans. Very dark, sometimes black eyes, were quite common. Rarely, a child was born with their irises being silver in color. According to legend, this quality was associated with a stronger awareness of the Force.
The Kel Dor's home planet, Dorin, had an atmosphere made of a unique gas not found outside of their world. The rest of the atmosphere was filled with helium. Their unique composition in the atmosphere created a problem when traveling through space and to other worlds. They were required to wear masks covering their face and eyes. Most other gasses including oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen were fatal if inhaled. Other atmospheres also make it difficult for the Kel Dor to speak so their masks include voice amplifiers since they must shout to even be remotely heard when not on Dorin. The goggles that are built into their masks are used to enhance their vision since they are practically blind when away from their native planet's atmosphere. While being slightly weaker compared to other species, the Kel Dors made up for it with amazing reflexes due to extra-sensory organs located in the heads. This made them particularly agile, along with being quick and critical thinkers.
