General Information
The Republic is a democratic based government led by the Supreme Chancellor. The Republic came to be with the signing of the Galactic Constitution by the Core Founders during the Unification Wars in 25,000 BBY. Coruscant was named the capital of the Republic, and shortly after the Perlemian Trade Route was mapped. This trade route linked the planet Coruscant and the planet Ossus, bringing the Jedi into the Republic.
History
The Rise of the Republic
Initially the Republic did not encourage rapid growth. Yet fear of the Hut Empire drove many worlds to immediately join the Republic for protection, causing an exponential rise in numbers.
For many years the Jedi and the Republic battled side by side against their enemies. In 24,000 BBY the Republic entered into war with the Honorable Union of Desevro & Tion. Pressure bombs wreaked havoc on both the capitals of Coruscant and of Desevro. Eventually the Republic was able to pull ahead and win the war by turning the Hutts against the Tionese. After their defeat, the Tion swore allegiance to Coruscant, with the exception of the planet Desevro.
Expansion
In 20,000 BBY the Republic began to expand East. This increased the Republic domain and the trade route boundaries that came to be referred to as The Slice. All expansion to the West was avoided due to hyperspatial anomalies in those regions. Throughout this time an Expansion Region was formed. This growth did not go unnoticed by other civilizations. Several attacks followed the newly established boundaries including the Alsakan Conflicts which consisted of 17 conflicts in all. The Republic easily claimed victory in all instances.
It was not until 15,500 BBY that the Republic faced another true threat. Star Dragons attacked Coruscant in what was referred to as the Duinuogwuin Conflict. Fortunately the wise Supreme Chancellor Fillorean was able to spare the loss of any lives and solved the conflict peacefully. The negotiations went so well that both the Supreme Chancellor and a Star Dragon philosopher named Borz'Mat'oh created the University of Coruscant.
Paralysis
As the Republic Empire had been growing, the Jedi had been fluctuating in number. Many splits occurred within the faction as some Jedi turned to the dark side. These splits were referred to as the Great Schisms. As the Jedi were sworn protectors of the Republic, the effects of the Great Schisms could be felt throughout the Galaxy. Fortunately as the Great Hyperspace War was triggered there were still enough Jedi to effectively defend the Republic from the Sith.
Despite a Third Great Schism and the devastating Mandelorian Wars, the Republic maintained its stength. It was not until approximately 3,756 BBY that the Republic found its power insufficient. As the Sith launched a surprise offensive against the Republic the Republic was caught off guard. The Jedi were unable to defend and results of this battle were devastating to the Republic. The Empire sacked the capital planet of Coruscant, forcing the Supreme Chancellor to sign the Treaty of Coruscant and paralyzing the Republic.
